Innovation, an Essential Attribute Required In Globalized World-Part-1:

Innovation, an Essential Attribute Required In Globalized World-Part-1:
Quality Required for Students and Professionals of All disciplines

Ramesh M. Gohil

Introduction:

In the world of globalization, our students, professionals and industrial scientists, engineers have started facing many challenges for jobs and product competitions, hence problems created for financial situation.  To cope with this type of situation, extra burden will be imposed on students, parents, schools, teachers and existing social systems or government.  Such situation will soon demand reform in our education system. In this direction China is moving very fast and reports suggest that many developing countries lack in this endeavor. We require innovation in every walk of life and to create culture which value, support innovation (creativity) and develop a network and mechanism for immediate implementation.

Innovation is not new and with this attribute we benefited from Stone Age. Our comforts, long life, quality of life, rapid knowledge acquiring techniques, etc. are mainly attributed to innovation and hard work   of innovative individuals.
With time, our  problems have changed ; new demands we are facing  in the areas of environments, energy sectors, medicines for new type of diseases, agriculture to resolve food demands, development of  efficient management systems, etc. Innovations in these complex areas require very specific education and skills. Hence in present days we are facing acute problems which impose many challenges on us.
I am going to present series of documents under heading of “Innovation” to cover followings:

a.     Concept of  innovation and  their applications.

b.     Type of innovation observed in nature (in animals, birds, and other creatures) and how directly or indirectly helped us.  How concept of zero, wheels, etc. may have developed.

c.      Beauty of derived innovations, how mother nature could be so delightful- how imaginary innovation  help  business.

d.     Why innovation became complex and became hard to handle for layman?

Normally the term innovation can be defined as something original resulting from  our  out of box thinking and, as consequence, new, better solutions than one existed,   that "breaks in to" the market , technologies,  processes, remove services,  products , processes, technologies, government and society.

An innovative work in a field if applied to totally another field brings great value to our society.  In Stone Age observations of tricks manifested in birds, animals, insects, etc brought great advancement in our society.

Section-1:  Paintings  made  in  18th Century  from observations of  animal’s  activities  inspired  innovative persons to find  applications  in  recently developed  technologies. Work in this area has made huge business.

A.    Monkeys forming a chain from overhanging branch (mamamirabelle) .

Picture of  monkeys forming a chain from overhanging branch in order to tease a crocodile.  This picture was made by  Bocourt from   a sketch made by Mouhot  , who explored      forests of  Siams, Laos and Lambodia  in 18th century and found many new  species of fishes, mammals, reptiles. Several  people have claimed  that they  observed   much innovative team behavior of monkeys  and forming chain.  True or not,  such innovative picture  could start a new  business  for amusement of  children (see http://littlekids.nationalgeographic.com/littlekids/mamamirabelle/).

Above picture  was  taken from the book of  “ Great Explorer” by Roderick  Owen, Mayflower Book, New York, 1979.    Team Traveled in the central parts of Indo-China (Siam), Cambodia, and Laos : during the years 1858, 1859 and 1860 .

a.     “The Myth of the Monkey Chain- unusual way of crossing rivers. ”

Fig. 2

Above  picture (Fig. 2) shows long-tailed, South American monkeys have an unusual way of crossing rivers. Clinging (holding together) to each other, they form their bodies into a living bridge that stretches between the trees on either side of a river. Other members of the pack then climb across this 'monkey chain' to reach the other side.

South American monkeys form living bridges in order to cross alligator-infested rivers the idea is curiously long-lived. Jesuit priest José de Acosta published the first account in Latin in 1589 — here’s a 1604 translation:

“Going from Nombre de Dios to Panama, I did see in Capira one of these monkeys leaped from one tree to another, which was on the other side of a river, making me much to wonder…..” .

Section-2:  Invention of Alphabets on wings of Butterfly

This example provides how the curiosity and persistence in work   achieve a goal of a man which no one would have undertaken.  From this work, Kjell  Sandved made millions of dollars.

History:

Back in 1960, a young Norwegian called Kjell  Sandved came to the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History to conduct research on animal behavior.  One day, Kjell found, inside an old cigar box, a butterfly that had a perfect letter 'F' on its wing. He was so impressed and  spent  much of his life (24 yrs) travelling the world, discovering  all 26  'letters'  of English alphabet and numbers  in nature, for example on the wings of butterflies.

Detailed View of the alphabets on Butterfly Wings-Is it  Innovation?

Fig.10

From  this  innovative findings (Figs. 9-  11),  Kjell  Sandved ,  started  a  business   of selling  calendars  of alphabets pictures  (shown above) and made money. Several books are written on this topic.

In this story,  Kjell  observed  a  letter “F”  on  a  wing of  butterfly.  His persistent work   showed us that   letters are  in  nature; pictures we see may be illusion but  emerging shapes are  comparable with alphabets.  Starting a business  reflects  its business  value.  This is an  innovation as this discovery is original and new that "breaks in to" the market or into society”.  Note that Newton's law of universal gravitation came in existence when  Newton observed  falling of  apple  from a tree.
